Remington 5mm Rimfire Magnum vs Badger

Last night I had decided that my wife, daughter and I were not going up to Tejon Ranch today.  You know how it is, there is so much to do and you only have two days to do it, so things like taking most of the day to go hunting don’t sound like such a great idea.  I don’t know what happened last night, but this morning I woke up at 6:30AM with the itch to head up to the ranch.  So, I gently woke my wife up and said, “I changed my mind, let’s go up to Tejon Ranch this morning.”  I didn’t get the response I was hoping for when she said, “You are so indecisive about these things”.  Her next statement though, a simple, “Okay” was all I needed to hear…  We were on our way.

The drive up was nothing special, but traffic was light and there were no accidents so we made decent time.  Of course, the normal stop at Wal-Mart and breakfast at a crowded Carl’s Jr. seemed to take a bit more longer than normal, so we ended up entering the ranch after 10:00AM!

Even though this was the last weekend of Bobcat season, it didn’t discourage me because I was looking forward to some ground squirrel shooting and Lilly (my daughter) getting a chance to shoot her bow.  The first valley we hit had a...

5mm-Craig Centerfire - by: C. Lowell Kenney

Fresh cool air, still moist from the thunderstorm yesterday flowed   through the cab of my Explorer as I sat along side the county road in South   Eastern Wyoming. Glassing the prairie through the 10x Bushnell binoculars showed   a scene that I had been waiting for a number of years. Prairie dog mounds that   just kept going as far as the horizon. As I swiveled my glasses, I began to   see the Prairie dogs, feeding in the prairie grasses near their holes or standing   watch over an area.

Laramie gunsmith, Jake Henry of Henry's Sport and Pawn was right, prairie   dogs were here by the acre. I stepped out of my Explorer to flag down a large   watertruck lumbering by, to inquire about hunting the land I was looking at.

"If you want to shoot here that is fine, but there are cattle   in the next pasture about a mile up the road, I don't want you shooting up there"   was the reply for the driver. We talked some of ranchers being able to spread   the grazing out by hauling water to watertanks and the damage that the Prairie   dogs do to the gr...

Bring Back the 5mm Rimfire Magnum

Part I

If you are a regular visitor to the rimfire forums available on the internet, then you have probably seen the posts asking about Remington's 5mm Rimfire Magnum. Even now, 30+ years after the Remington 591 & 592 rifles were discontinued, folks are still fans of this caliber.

Introduced in 1969, Remington hoped to bring a caliber to the table that could challenge the .22 WMR introduced by Winchester a decade earlier. The factory cartridge was impressive by 1969 standards. It consisted of a 38 grain "Remington Power-Lokt HP" 0.2045" diameter bullet with a factory listed muzzle velocity of 2100 feet per second. Remington released two rifles chambered in this caliber; the 591 and the 5...
